Myriad means “ten thousand,” “an extremely great number,” or “a great variety” (Oxford Dictionary). It represents abundance and possibilities. In the ancient world one of the symbols for myriad resembled the sun, whose powerful light illuminates what we cannot see in the dark.
The therapy process is like a light held up to the confusion in our lives, helping us gain understanding into how the past has affected us. Harmful and traumatic life experiences lead us to both helpful and destructive ways to cope and feel safe. We live our lives with these behaviors on autopilot. They live with us until we can examine them, heal the trauma that remains, and teach the hurting parts of ourselves that we are safe now.
Often, clients leave therapy with more than they anticipated. They may start out not knowing why their life isn’t “working,” or wanting to “feel better.” They leave with new insights into themselves and their story, and coping skills to feel more confident and in control of themselves. Healing opens up the neglected parts of ourselves that didn’t feel safe enough to be seen or heard. That is true freedom.
